Oil painting mediums and solvents
Every now and then I get the chemistry set out and have a dabble with different oil painting mediums and solvents. For an underpainting I will use turps. I’m not a fan of white spirit, I don’t like the smell, but I use it to rinse brushes as it’s cheap. I’ve tried various oil painting mediums made up of varying concentrations of linseed oil, stand oil, turps, damar varnish etc, but I usually come back to a simple 50-50 combination of stand oil and turps. It just needs to loosen up the paint a bit so that I can push it around on the surface, and the addition of stand oil helps to avoid the paint ‘sinking’ into the canvas.
