Chalk pastel drawing studies

I’m going through a phase, or at least getting into the habit, of making colour studies with chalk pastels on paper before I commit to a painting. These days decent oil paint is expensive and the canvas panels, which I make myself, take time to make. So, more preliminary studies are in order. I am using chalk pastels on acid free 300g cartridge paper which I stretch, and sometimes add a coloured ground to beforehand. The studies are relatively small and quick to make as the pastel is very direct to draw with and there is no drying time involved. I am enjoying the direct process of applying colour with the pastels and I am already thinking of different ways to apply the oil colours when I get to the painting stage. There are a few examples on my Drawings and Studies page.
