Oil on gesso panel, Bristol floating harbour

January morning, Bristol floating harbour

I enjoyed a short contract working near Bristol floating harbour in January. This was the view as I walked around the harbour each morning, with the tall masts of the SS Great Britain in the middle distance. This painting turned into a tonal study of muted colours and greys contrasting with the harbour-side lights, as I aimed to suggest the still and frosty atmosphere.

It’s not often that I paint directly onto a gesso-ed panel, I usually glue down a calico or canvas surface first, but I think this smoother surface suited the subject.
